Services and Facilities

The integrated library system facilitates lending, reference, information access and offers comprehensive portfolio of service to the students, faculty and researchers. The Learner Support Services assists the culturally diverse FUSST learning communities. A key focus of the LSS is to enable learners to utilize learning facilities to the maximum.

Lending

All registered participants with valid FUSST ID are eligible for library loans with varying borrowing privileges. Library materials on reserve, periodicals, reference, and items with restricted access cannot be borrowed.

Book Reservation

Books has been borrowed by any participant can be reserved by another one. An e-mail notification will be sent to the member who has reserved the item. Reserved items will be held at circulation desk for 3 days, after that they will be shelved. Faculty may be given priority in this regard. Books can only be reissued once, provided that the same is not reserved by other learner.

Inter Library Loan (ILL)

The unshared and flatfish aim is to render vibrant and relevant information services; Modes Operandi is to work in conjunction with libraries and other institutions to implement bi-way cooperation. Library extends instant help without zero-waiting of time to those who want to benefit from other important and renowned libraries of the country. The Inter library Loans service helps staff, faculty and students to obtain material that is not available in the FUSST Library.

Material (including books, magazine/journal articles or newspaper articles) not owned by FUSST IRC can be borrowed from any other Pakistani library. Initially this service is limited to some local university libraries only. This service is available to all FUSST IRC/ library members at no charge.

Please first verify unavailability of the required material in FUSST IRC collection by checking library catalogue. For any such material request can be made through ILL Request Form available at circulation desk. The request is send to other libraries through e-mail or via telephone. When request is met the external library sends the original item or a photocopy of it. It can take 3 week or more to get the required item.

Reference Service

Experienced and well-learned library professionals are always willing to assist the users with the ‘comprehensive information and research materials. The Reference Desk is staffed throughout the day to help researchers in locating information and data by using the latest print and electronic resources. Researchers are assisted in grasping current as well as historical information at the Help Disk. The Reference Desk provides support as to use of library collections, and respond to in-person, phone and e-mail subject inquiries. Reference assistance includes answering directional and reference queries, providing instruction, know-how of searching resources, technical assistance, and referral services. If required, learners can also be referred to other libraries, offices or individuals.

Photocopy and Scanning Services

There are photocopiers available within and outside the library. Limited scanning facility is available within the library; however, the services of professional scanning can be availed from the copier shops.

Theses Consultation Service

This service was started to facilitate the FUSST research students, where they can view, read the research projects/Theses of senior students of previous years for seeking guidance for the completion of their own research projects. BS and Master Theses are available only in hard/soft form, whereas MS/MPhil and PhD. Theses are available in both soft and hard form. Two desktop computer systems have been designated for Theses consultation for students of BS, Master, MS/MPhil and Ph.D. at the 1st Floor of Information Resource Center.

Circulation Service

All registered users of library are entitled to borrow books and items from lending section. Lending privileges differ for various categories of membership. Renewal and reservation services are also available for the same. For further details please see: library circulation Policy.

Reference Service

FUSST IRC also provides Reference Service. Users may ask queries via telephone 05151437-8 (Ext: 216 & 408) or through e-mail: librarian.furc@fui.edu.pk, Query Management System (QMS) (libonline.fusst@fui.edu.pk)

Searching Assistance

For items not located on the shelf or easily accessible in the catalog, inquiry can be made at the circulation desk where assistance will be provided.

Current Awareness Service (CAS)

Through Fresh Arrivals information about new additions to the collection is regularly send to all members via e-mail. New additions remain on New Arrival’s Shelf for a week before sending to their relevant sections. Press Clippings containing news about higher education is also circulated through e-mail.

Online Searching

28x Twenty-eight terminals are dedicated for online database searching.

  1. Library Membership:

Library Membership is required to avail library services. Students, staff, faculty, TAs, researchers are entitled for library membership. Beside that the library also provides access to people from outside university community through its external membership services. The faculty and staff are required to fill a library membership form and submit it at the circulation desk in the library. The library membership forms are available from library circulation desk as well as from help desk.  There is no registration fee for IRC Registration. Registration is open for FUSST Students/ Permanent Faculty Members/ Staff Members. IRC does not issue membership card separately. Your Student/Employee card is used for library services.

Membership

Members is provided to:

  • Faculty (including visiting)
  • Students
  • Administrative Staff/University employees

University ID card will be used as library membership card and is needed for borrowing material and entry. Members are fully responsible for all material on loan. Change of contact information (address and telephone number) must be reported to the librarian immediately. Membership is non-transferable.

Terms of Loan

Information material of the following nature shall not be issued but consulted in the library:

  • Works marked REFERENCE/RESERVED such as books encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, etc.
  • Current issues of periodicals and newspapers
  • Unprocessed/under process material
  • Theses, student’s project/ research reports, pamphlets
  • Non-printed material other than received as allied material
  • Works other than mentioned above may be issued on recommendation of Dean/HoD Department in temporarily loan category (i.e. for 2/3 hours)

Renewal

  • Loan may be got renewed for further thirty/fourteen days provided no other user has reserved it.
  • Overdue material will not be reissued.
  • If borrowed material is urgently required in the library, it may be called back.
  • Librarian may withhold/ restrict circulation of any material.
  • Books currently cannot be reissued on telephone/ by email.

Fines

Overdue Fines

  • Books and other information borrowed from FUSST IRC must be returned within the due date mentioned on due date slip.
  • Items not returned within due date will be fined as follow:

Regular loan:  Rs. 5 per day

Overdue Fines

  • If borrowed material is damaged or destroyed, the borrower will be asked to deposit a replacement or fine which may be up to three times of the actual cost of the material.
  • In case an item or book which is a part of the set lost or damaged, the borrower will make the payment of the whole set.
  • Any borrowed material not returned within the due date will be considered lost.

General

  • Volume of conversation must be kept very low inside the library.
  • Personal belongings are to be left at the library entrance.
  • Members may be asked to submit any possession for inspection.
  • In case any personal reading material has to be taken inside the library, permission must be obtained from library staff.
  • All reading material issued to members shall be shown to the attendant at the exit.
  • Use of mobile phones and music system in not permitted.
  • Damaging material in any way is strictly prohibited, and will be fined.
  • Eating, sleeping and smoking is prohibited.
  • Members shall make their own arrangements for carrying books, etc., to and from the library.
  • The librarian is authorized to withdraw library facilities from any member who is found misusing the library resources or facilities.
  • The library shall not receive any telephone call or mail message on behalf of any member.
  • Students shall not be allowed to use library telephone.
  • Members are responsible for timely return of borrowed material to the library.
  • Library material already checked out by some other member can be reserved. On receiving the material library will inform the requester for collecting it. If not collected within two days, reservation will be cancelled.
  • Reference material may be photocopied, where copyright rules permit, on payment.
